SUBSTANCE
Abelmoschus moschatus. Syn.: Hibiscus abelmoschus. Musk mallow. Ambrette. Musk okra.
Family Malvaceae. Order Malvales.
Musk mallow is a herbaceous annual or biennial, erect or trailing, to 1.5 m high, with rough, hairy, lobed leaves and large yellow flowers with a darker or purplish centre that bloom for one day only. It grows in shrub land, wetlands and riparian zones in India, China and tropical Asia. The plant has been introduced in Central and South America. Australia and elsewhere.

The plant is the source of ambrette seed oil used in luxury perfumery, cosmetic products and as an additive in the preparation of various kinds ofchewing tobacco, baked products, sweets, alcohols such as vermouth and bitters, and some non-alcoholic drinks. Arabs sometimes flavour their coffee with the seed. The seeds are burned as incense and used in making incense sticks called agarbattis. Ambrette oil possesses an odour similar to that of animal musk.
The main constituents of the seeds are fatty oils consisting of linoleic acid and oleic acid, an essential oil composed of farnesol and farnesyl esters, and flavonols, particularly myricetin. It is to the actions of myricetin that the reported blood-sugar lowering ability of the plant is attributed.

In the Philippines a decoction of the roots and leaves is taken as an emollient remedy for gonorrhoea and rheumatism, while in Burma and the Philippines the seed is said to have stomachic, tonic, diuretic, antihysteric, stimulating and antispasmodic properties. The seeds placed between clothes keep away insects.

Ambrette is a close relative to okra, a popular horticultural crop.
